Another letter from Larry. Apparently, I recommended that he read Anne Morrow Lindbergh's "Gift from the Sea." It seems he didn't think much of the idea, but picked it up along with some other books, and saved it for last, at least to read the part I liked, which apparently had something to do with living simply by the sea, writing in the mornings, walking in the afternoons. An idea which still appeals to me. It appealed to him, as well, but somewhat differently. He writes: "She talked of the value of being alone beinig in its effect of replenishing the person's capacity for giving of himself. This is possible, she says, because the only way a person can truly give of h imself and live wholely and honestly with others, to first be able to live with oneself. This is true, yet is it simply because when a person sets himmself away from his outside diversions, confining himself only to inward concerns, he only becomes more eager to rejoin society?......unconsciously being governed by theory which says one will enjoy one thing more if he is away from it...choice between the conflicting qualities..."

Haven't had a relationship with someone capable of this kind of intellectual interaction since. He recommends I read John Stuart Mill.
